The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annual sled dog race in Alaska, where mushers and teams of typically 16 dogs cover 1,161 miles in eight to fifteen days. It commemorates the heroic rush by dogsled to get influenza vaccine across the Alaska interior to Nome during an epidemic in 1925. 9/08
