This ad aired immediately after Michael Phelps won his 10th Gold Medal on August 12th at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing in the 200 meter Freestyle swim. With that victory, he had won more Olympic Gold Medals than any athlete ever. Less than an hour later, he won his 11th Gold Medal as a team member competing in the Men's 4x200M Freestyle Relay. Three days later on August 15th, he won his 12th Gold by one one-hundredth of a second in the 100M Butterfly to tie U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz's 1972 record of 7 Golds in 1 Olympics. On August 17th in Beijing, his team won the Men's 4X100 Meter Medley Relay and secured Phelps' place in history as the only athlete ever to take 8 Golds in a single Olympics. 8/08

Visa congratulates Michael Phelps upon becoming the first athlete in history to win 8 Gold Medals in a single Olympics. This ad aired in the U.S. on August 16th immediately after Phelps and his fellow swim team members won the Men's 4X100 Meter Medley Relay in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Michael was also on the teams that won the Men's 4x200M and 4x100M Freestyle Relays and and won individual Gold in the 200M and 400M individual medleys, the 200M Freestyle as well as the 100M and 200M Butterfly events.

Nastia Liukin won the Olympic Gold Medal in the Women's All-Around Gymnastic Competition on August 14th during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She is only the 3rd U.S. Olympic gymnast to accomplish this honor, joining Mary Lou Retton of West Virginia and fellow Texan Carly Patterson. The daughter of two former Soviet champion gymnasts, Olympic gold medalist Valeri Liukin and World Champion rhythmic gymnast Anna Kotchneva, Nastia Liukin was born in Moscow and moved to the United States as a child. 8/08

Sarah Burke (September 3, 1982 – January 19, 2012) was a Canadian freestyle skier who was a pioneer of the superpipe event. She was a four-time Winter X Games gold medalist, and won the world championship in the halfpipe in 2005. She successfully lobbied the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to have the event added to the Olympic program for the 2014 Winter Olympics. She was considered a medal favourite in the event.
